La Pastera

In early 1952, starving and exhausted, Guevara and Granado arrived in their motorcycle to San Martín de los Andes.Lanín National Park mayor offered them accommodation in a shed where grass for animals was stored. In “La Pastera” they found shelter and food thanks to the generosity of the workers, and particularly, to don Pedro Olate, the night watchman who received them with a barbecue. After several days of travelling through the area, they resumed their trip towards Bariloche.

“(...) however there are times when I think with deep desire in the wonderful regions of the south. Maybe one day, when I’m tired of wandering, I will come back to Argentina and then, if not as a permanent home, at least a transit place towards another conception of the world, I will visit and settle again the region of the Andean lakes”.Ernesto Guevara

“Thursday 31 we were accommodated in a National Park shed. In San Martín de los Andes. We met the mayor, who is very kind and concerned about the conservation of the flora and fauna. We also met the night watchman, a folkloric poem (...) He enjoys chatting and likes wine, and wanted to keep us in no matter what. We slept there. At dawn, with a backpack full of supplies, we set out to know the Lácar lake (...)Alberto Granado

(“With Che through South America”)
Dear mum, (...)
After that, immersed in thousands difficulties that we sorted out with our usual skill, we arrived to San Martín de los Andes, a beautiful place, surrounded by virgin woods with a wonderful lake; anyway, it is worth the while knowing it (...) A warm hug from your son who loves you
