Once the revolutionary government was settled, the Commander Che Guevara was appointed chief of San Carlos de La Cabaña Fortress and he started to be part of the State’s management. He was appointed chief official of the Industrialization Department of the National Institute of Agrarian Reform (INRA), Minister of Industry, and president of the National Bank. During this period he was proclaimed a Cuban citizen by birth. He decisively promoted the Agrarian Reform, the nationalization of foreign companies as well as the development of the iron and steel industry. During this period, the spirit of sacrifice and the capacity to perform different duties appear in its entire dimension. The initiative for voluntary work, the strict austerity in his personal life and the fight against privileges illustrate this.
“The feeling of the massive against the personal has really developed in me; I am the same solitary man I used to be, looking for my path without personal help, but I now possess the sense of my historical duty. I don’t have a home or wife or children or parents or brothers and sisters, my friends are so as long as they think politically as I do; however, I’m happy, I feel something in life -not just a powerful inner force, that I’ve always felt- but the power to inject it to others and my mission’s absolutely fatalist sense takes all the fear away”.Letter to his mother.
June 1959“The guerrilla is, mainly and above all, an agrarian revolutionary. He interprets the desires of the large farming mass of being the owners of the land, of the production means, of their animals, of all that for which they have fought during years, that which makes up their life and their cemetery...
This Movement did not invent the Agrarian Revolution. It will execute it. It will comprehensively execute it until there is no farmer without land, or land without farmer”.¿Qué es un guerrillero? (What is a guerrilla?)
